Founded in 1963 as New England's first professional repertory ballet company, Boston Ballet is one of two companies celebrating its 50th anniversary during the 2013–2014 season. A participant in the Kennedy Center's Ballet Across America celebrations in 2008 and 2013, Boston Ballet now takes over the Opera House stage for a full engagement of its own, highlighting the breadth of the company's artistic range.
Among the works presented will be D.M.J. 1953–1977 by renowned Czech choreographer Petr Zuska. This passionate and tragic exploration of star-crossed love, yearning, isolation, and death is titled after the initials of three great Czech composers--Antonin Dvorák, Bohuslav Martinu, and Leos Janácek--whose music is featured in the work.
The Rubies movement of Balanchine's Jewels sends its dancers racing across the stage like lightning to Igor Stravinsky's jazz-inflected Capriccio for Piano and Orchestra. 
Boston Ballet will also perform Bella Figura by Jirí Kylián, another acclaimed Czech-born choreographer. Praised as "a gorgeous flourish of staging, costuming, lighting, and daring theatrics" by the Boston Herald, the work increasingly confines its nine dancers with opening and closing curtains, displaying Kylián's inventive combination of lyricism and comedy set to music by several Baroque composers.
