Merce Cunningham, Artistic Director

Kennedy Center Honoree and National Medal of Arts recipient Merce Cunningham is "an artist whose imprint is unmistakable" (The New York Times). For more than half a century, his choreography has been re-defining principles of movement and breath, space and perspective, continuity and climax, taking on new levels of meaning every time his dancers perform. Cunningham's collaborations with such musicians and visual artists as John Cage, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, and Andy Warhol are legendary. And his experimentation with chance and surprise--whether he's rolling a die to determine the sequence of events or uniting dance, music, and design for the first time at the moment of performance--continues to engender works of stunning imagination.

Merce Cunningham Dance Company's 50th anniversary engagement in 2004 moved the Washington Post to extol the "fluidity and precision of the dancers" in a program that "showed Cunningham at his nervy, brash best." This season, the ensemble performs classic Cunningham repertory, including Fabrications, featuring music by Emanuel Dimas de Melo Pimenta, and Sounddance, with music by David Tudor. They will also perform the Washington premiere of his new work Views on Stage, a Kennedy Center co-commission featuring a score for piano and organ by John Cage and stage design by Brazilian artist Ernesto Neto.

"The high priest of the dance avant-garde"

"Illuminating and boundary breaking…he has pushed modern dance into new realms."
