About

"Emotional and thought-provoking, sensual and multi-sensory work of art"
--The Herald-Times

"Ingenious…highly stimulating to mind and eye"
--The New York Times

Co-founded by the charismatic Tony Award–winning choreographer and 2010 Kennedy Center Honoree Bill T. Jones and his late partner Arnie Zane, the Harlem-based Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company is recognized as one of the most innovative and powerful forces in the modern dance world. Bringing together movement, music, and the spoken word to articulate compelling perspectives on the major issues of our times, their repertoire shows that "taking risks for art is what Bill T. Jones does best" (The Washington Post).

Continuing a tradition of challenging, thought-provoking work, Jones has created a new evening-length piece inspired by the life and legacy of Abraham Lincoln. Commissioned by and premiered at the Ravinia Festival in Highland Park, Illinois, in 2009, Fondly Do We Hope... Fervently Do We Pray is the most ambitious project in the company's 25-year history. The work, danced to live music, investigates the myriad meanings of Lincoln, rejecting accepted truth in favor of challenging and celebrating the lasting contributions of this great man. By envisioning the America that might have been had Lincoln completed the Reconstruction, Mr. Jones exposes the great distance between what is and what could have been.
