About

Merce Cunningham Dance Company
Legacy Tour

"Mr. Cunningham ranks among the foremost figures of artistic modernism and among the few who have transformed the nature and status of dance theater."
--The New York Times

With these Kennedy Center performances, the Merce Cunningham Dance Company celebrates its late founder's genius and the art form that the legendary choreographer so fervently pursued, before giving its final performance in New York on December 31, 2011. Kennedy Center Honoree Merce Cunningham envisioned this Legacy Tour as a final coming together of his most well-regarded works, including Antic Meet, Squaregame, and Sounddance, the dancers he chose and trained, and the live music that set his creativity into motion.

Cunningham was a leader of the American avant-garde throughout his 70 year career. His choreography redefined principles of movement and breath, space and perspective, shifting the conversation on dance and the broader visual arts every time it was performed. Now the Merce Cunningham Dance Company is touring the world for a final time in a campaign to inspire the next generation of modern dancers before taking a final bow.

Performance Timing: 1 hour, 45 minutes
  Squaregame  (
26 min., followed by a 15-min. intermission)
Antic Meet  (30 min., followed by a 15-min. intermission)
