KENNEDY CENTER DEBUT
Saburo Teshigawara / KARAS
Saburo Teshigawara, Artistic Director
Mirror and Music - NORTH AMERICAN PREMIERE
Choreography by Saburo Teshigawara
"One of the most striking examples of imagistic dance-theater, or dance-art installation, that I have ever seen"
--The New York Times
"Teshigawara is an astonishingly articulate performer…a visionary of the stage."
Saburo Teshigawara began his unique creative career in his native Tokyo, forming his company KARAS with Kei Miyata in 1985. Since then, he and KARAS have performed in major cities around the world. In addition to solo performances and his work with KARAS, Teshigawara has received international attention as a choreographer/director, creating commissions for many international companies such as the Paris Opera Ballet. Also a renowned visual artist, Teshigawara has created art, films, and videos as well as designed sets, lighting, and costumes for all his performances.
For their Kennedy Center debut, Teshigawara and KARAS bring the North American premiere of Mirror and Music, which explores the simultaneously tangible and intangible nature of music and the reflection we see when we look into the mirror. The London Evening Standard exclaims, "The dancers, including Teshigawara himself, are exceptional, light limbed, and fleet of foot…in solos and group sections for all eight which make them look like a flock of birds, swooping and dipping in an ingenious skip-shimmy-slide across the stage. The style mixes intentionally awkward falls and shudders with a kind of neo-neo-classicism."
