Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater

“Be prepared for two things: a continued devotion to tradition, but also big, refreshing surprises.”—The Chicago Tribune

Now more than ever, the world needs the power of dance to bring people together and connect us all by our common humanity. Celebrating its 60th anniversary, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater continues to push the art form into fascinating new territory while still honoring signature classics like Ailey’s masterpiece of hope and redemption, Revelations

PROGRAM A
Lazarus (Rennie Harris)
Revelations (Alvin Ailey)
Tue., Feb. 5 at 7 p.m.
Fri., Feb. 8 at 7:30 p.m.
Sat., Feb. 9 at 7:30 p.m.

In Lazarus, the Company’s first two-act ballet, acclaimed Hip Hop choreographer Rennie Harris is inspired by the life and legacy of Mr. Ailey. Co-commissioned by the Kennedy Center, Lazarus connects past and present as a powerful work that addresses the racial inequities America faced when Mr. Ailey founded the company in 1958 and still faces today.

PROGRAM B
Kairos (Wayne McGregor)
The Call (Ronald K. Brown)
Juba (Robert Battle)
Revelations
Wed., Feb. 6 at 7:30 p.m.
Sun., Feb. 10 at 1:30 p.m.

Ronald K. Brown’s The Call is a joyous mix of modern and African dance that fits the Ailey dancers perfectly, and his themes of spiritual awakening and redemption never fail to inspire. His seventh work for the Company—set to recordings by Yo-Yo Ma, Mary Lou Williams, and Asase Yaa Entertainment Group—promises to once again rouse audiences with Brown’s infectious call for harmony and hope.

Ailey is the first American company to perform Kairos by British iconoclast Wayne McGregor, whose inventive contemporary ballet is played out to Max Richter’s reimagining of Vivaldi's The Four Seasons. Like McGregor’s wildly popular Chroma, Kairos uses walls to create a starkly dramatic onstage world—the perfect setting for his sinuous, angular movement.

Artistic Director Robert Battle’s Juba, his first creation for Ailey, is a modern-day “Rite of Spring” with an abstract twist—an electrifying thrill ride through ritual and folk tradition. Battle’s uninhibited movement melds seamlessly with an original score for string quartet and percussion by his frequent collaborator John Mackey.

PROGRAM C
Timeless Ailey
Thu., Feb. 7 at 7:30 p.m.
Sat., Feb. 9 at 1:30 p.m.

The Company also brings Timeless Ailey, a special program that brings new vitality to more than a dozen treasures from Mr. Ailey’s wonderfully rich body of work, including highlights of seldom-seen gems Choral Dances, Hidden Rites, and The Lark Ascending as well as perennial favorites like Love Songs, Night Creature, Cry, and Revelations.

Feb. 9 at 5:30 p.m.: Free Revelations workshop on the Millennium Stage
