About

Ragamala Dance Company
Ranee Ramswamy and Aparna Ramswamy, Artistic Directors

“Gorgeous, dramatic, rich, and warm—a true delight!”—The Washington Post

Ragamala Dance Company, the creation of mother/daughter team Ranee and Aparna Ramaswamy, returns after a spirited performance in the Kennedy Center’s 2011 maximum INDIA festival. Drawing from the classical Indian dance form bharatanatyam, the company’s work provides a bridge between ancient and modern cultures.

Written in Water
In one of the company’s newest productions, the childhood game Snakes & Ladders—a second-century Indian board game—sets the stage for the emotional journey that unfolds when people search for truth while desperately attempting to avoid human failing. With the Sufi poem “The Conference of Birds” as a framework, rich choreography is paired with original music by Iraqi American jazz artist Amir ElSaffar and Carnatic composer Prema Ramamurthy and performed live by ElSaffar and an ensemble. Projections by Chennai-based cartoonist Keshav and Minneapolis artist Nathan Christopher draw you even further into this mesmerizing world.

Enjoy a free pre-show Interactive Game-playing Experience created by company members.

Delve deeply into the psychological implications of the Indian board game Paramapadam (precursor to Snakes & Ladders), which is a central inspiration for Written in Water. This hands-on experience, along with accompanying video from the artists, provides access to the abstract, conceptual nature of Written in Water and the way Ragamala creates multidisciplinary and culturally hybridic dance works, based in the South Indian dance form of bharatanatyam. Written in Water performance ticket required.
