“A goddess dances… the bharatanatyam of Malavika Sarukkai was flawless.”—The Guardian

For over three decades, Malavika Sarukkai has been a master dancer and choreographer in the classical Indian dance style of bharatanatyam. A firm believer in the continuity of tradition, she preserves key elements of the style in her work while creating a contemporary and personal interpretation of its cultural significance.

Thari—The Loom
A U.S. premiere!
Last seen at the Kennedy Center in 2013, Malavika Sarukkai now brings her latest production—a collaboration with her dancers and her first work choreographed for an ensemble. Thari—The Loom delves into the history and legacy of the sari, the hand-woven “unstitched garment” from India. With specially commissioned music by Sai Shravanam, Professor C. V. Chandrasekhar, and Aditya Prakash, and creative elements from filmmaker Sumantra Ghosal, the work explores the interplay between the eternal and the changing, assuming mythic and philosophical dimensions as the sari becomes a metaphor for life itself.

Performance Timing: 73 minutes, with no intermission.

Dancers: Malavika Sarukkai, Jyotsna Jagannathan, Aruna Balagurunathan, Adithya Pattuvanmare Veedu, Nidhaga Karunad Bangalore Mohan Kumar, Shreema Upadhyaya
