Session III: Ah, to be Human
Slips and slides and the exposure of human foibles are at the root of comedy, and ballet, performed without words but with obvious opportunities for slips and slides, is perfectly suited to it. Whether they're telling tales of feckless lovers, tricking overprotective parents, or putting the powerful in their place, ballets like Coppèlia and La Fille Mal Gardée can be an ideal mirror of the human condition.

Alexandra Tomalonis has been a dance critic for nearly 30 years, writing frequently for the Washington Post, Dance Magazine, and other publications. She is the editor of DanceView magazine, and its online review supplement, danceviewtimes.com. Ms. Tomalonis is Director of Academics at the Kirov Academy of Ballet in Washington, D.C., where she teaches ballet history, art history, and aesthetics.
