Session III: Walking and Waltzing
New York City Ballet has long been the "King of the Triple Bill." Its founder, choreographer George Balanchine, took this form and created a varied constellation of ballets set to every imaginable type of music. Jerome Robbins, bouncing from ballet to Broadway and back, also enriched this style of ballet. How can ballets be based on walking (Robbins's Glass Pieces) and on waltzing (Balanchine's Vienna Waltzes)? Come explore that idea and others.

Alexandra Tomalonis has been a dance critic for nearly 30 years, writing frequently for the Washington Post, Dance Magazine, and other publications. She is the editor of DanceView magazine, and its online review supplement, danceviewtimes.com. Ms. Tomalonis is Director of Academics at the Kirov Academy of Ballet in Washington, D.C., where she teaches ballet history, art history, and aesthetics.
