Session IV: The Magic Carpet
In the 19th century, theaters were considered by some to be "magic carpets," whisking viewers away to other places and other times. Ballet still fulfills that function, sometimes literally (Marius Petipa's Le Corsaire) and sometimes by taking us into the soul of a character or a work (José Límon's The Moor's Pavane). Come take a journey into worlds far and deep.

Alexandra Tomalonis has been a dance critic for nearly 30 years, writing frequently for the Washington Post, Dance Magazine, and other publications. She is the editor of DanceView magazine, and its online review supplement, danceviewtimes.com. Ms. Tomalonis is Director of Academics at the Kirov Academy of Ballet in Washington, D.C., where she teaches ballet history, art history, and aesthetics.
