The third and fourth operas unveil a heroic comedy followed by a denouement of tragic dimensions, yet with the potential for a world's renewal. Musicologist Saul Lilienstein will trace the development of character through music as the boy Siegfried, an unwitting child of destiny, blundering and blustering his way through two acts--until he learns the meaning of fear in the eyes of the woman he awakens. In the final opera, perhaps Wagner's most expansive orchestral score, the rich treasury of leitmotifs combine in polyphonic mastery as the drama traces a path of treachery, murder and the twilight of the gods--towards a final redemption for mankind.
