About

Join dance critic Alexandra Tomalonis as she uses video of well-known ballets to take us beyond the steps and into the craft of ballet. Each session uses a company or ballet being presented during the 2016–2017 season as the jumping off point for a deeper exploration of the art form.

Ballet 360°: New York City Ballet

George Balanchine made a few fairy tale ballets (The Nutcracker and Le Baiser de la Fée are two rare exceptions) but the great Russian American choreographer is most known for being one of the leaders in the break away from story ballets. His works take the music as the libretto, and he taught us to look at choreography. No fairy godmothers are needed. This year, his company, the New York City Ballet, will bring several of Balanchine's modern classics, as well as new works by Justin Peck, Christopher Wheeldon, and Alexei Ratmansky, with subjects ranging from American square dancing to Broadway, where, of course, fairytales still live on.

Lecture Timing: 90 minutes with no intermission

NOTE: New York City Ballet does not participate in this session.
