Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra, János Rolla, leader
The Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra was founded in Budapest
in 1963 by a group of former students who had studied and worked together
at the famous Franz Liszt Music Academy. János Rolla, one of Hungary's
leading violinists, has been concertmaster of the orchestra since its
inception. The orchestra with more than 200 recordings on Hungaroton,
CBS, Teldec, EMI, Erato, Denon, and Sony Classical, is one of the most
beloved by radio listeners. Though a regular visitor to European music
centers, this supremely nuanced chamber orchestra is rarely heard live
in the Western Hemisphere. After a visit to London, Richard Joseph
commented in the Financial Times, “The Orchestra’s best qualities
were on display. Each section had an unusual homogenity of tone, with
every part equally matched. The ensemble was nearly faultless and leader
János Rolla had encouraged a wide range of bowing and tone production.
Overall, the performance had an easy grace that was entirely apt.”
