He's one of Shakespeare's most famous comic characters. Braggart, lecher, con man, habitual liar--the incorrigible yet irresistible rogue Falstaff comes to life in Verdi's comic opera, based on The Merry Wives of Windsor
. Up to his usual machinations, Sir John Falstaff attempts to woo two married noblewomen at the same time, in hopes of procuring their fortunes. His scheme is quickly discovered, however, and the women get hilarious revenge. Complete with disguises, cross-dressing, plots and counterplots, this buoyant opera sparkles with exquisite music and a youthful exuberance that only the Kirov can capture. Sung in Italian with English supertitles.
Part of the citywide festival Shakespeare in Washington.
