"Friendly, idealistic, and highly skilled" --The New Yorker
"Unremitting intensity" --Los Angeles Times
This dynamic sextet is applauded for its unique style and theatrical flair. Formed more than a decade ago at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, eighth blackbird's name--derived from a Wallace Stevens poem--reflects the group's innovative artistry in a broad range of contemporary music. They now return to the Kennedy Center with the Washington premiere of a colorful and kinetic program entitled The Only Moving Thing. Composed by Steve Reich, who the New York Times ranks "among the great composers of the century," Double Sextet features eighth blackbird performing simultaneously live and pre-recorded. As a continuous weave of music and motion, singing in the dead of night is a unique collaboration between maverick composers David Lang, Michael Gordon, and Julia Wolfe, and seminal choreographer Susan Marshall.
