JUST RELEASED! Kennedy Center Jazz Recordings presents its newest CD, Walkin' & Swingin', recorded live at last year's Women in Jazz Festival and dedicated to the late Dr. Billy Taylor (1921–2010), Kennedy Center Artistic Director for Jazz (1994–2010) and founder of the Festival (est. 1996).
The Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Festival marks its 16th thrilling year with three evenings hosted by Dee Dee Bridgewater of star-studded performances featuring the world's top female jazz artists. The Washington Post says the festival "speaks volumes about the contributions women have made to jazz--and continue to make--both here and abroad." Thu., May 19: the JaLaLa vocal group, featuring founding members of the Manhattan Transfer JanisSiegel and Laurel Massé, and Lauren Kinhan of New York Voices; plus flutist Jamie Baum and her Septet; and saxophonist Tia Fuller and her Quartet. Fri., May 20 (Abbey Lincoln Tribute): a special tribute to the late vocalist Abbey Lincoln with Terri Lyne Carrington as Music Director, and vocalists Dee Dee Bridgewater, Dianne Reeves, and Cassandra Wilson. Sat., May 21: multi-instrumentalist Corky Hale; plus the duo of pianist Peggy Stern and saxophonist "Sweet"SueTerry; and, special guest vocalist Marlena Shaw with FIVE PLAY: drummer Sherrie Maricle, saxophonist Janelle Reichman, bassist Noriko Ueda, pianist Tomoko Ohno, and trumpet and flugelhorn player Jami Dauber.
