A renowned Schubert interpreter, pianist Christoph Eschenbach, Music Director for the Kennedy Center and National Symphony Orchestra, makes his Fortas debut, renewing his partnership with baritone Matthias Goerne in Schubert's magnificent song cycle Winterreise, 24 songs to poems of Wilhelm Müller. When Matthias Goerne was nearly six, he first heard Winterreise and was captivated; so captivated, in fact, that he committed all 24 songs to memory.
Maestro Eschenbach says, "I've performed Schubert's Winterreise with Matthias Goerne many times, and I always find something new each time we prepare this marvelous work together." Sixteen of the songs are in minor keys, depicting the emotions of a lovelorn wanderer against a bleak, wintry landscape. "If there is one quality that distinguishes Matthias Goerne's singing--apart from the rich, large sound of his baritone--it is his ability both to create and to inhabit the emotional world a song describes." (The New York Times).
Performance Timing: Approximately 75 minutes, with no intermission.
