"One of the most important and versatile young chamber ensembles on the scene"
--Detroit Free Press
Since 1997, the Grammy(r)-nominated wind quintet Imani Winds has taken a unique path, carving out a distinct presence in the classical music world with its dynamic playing, culturally poignant programming, genre-blurring collaborations, and inspirational outreach programs. With two member-composers and a deep commitment to commissioning new work, the group is enriching the traditional wind quintet repertoire while meaningfully bridging European, American, African, and Latin American traditions.
When asked to describe the group's philosophy, oboist Toyin Spellman-Diaz said, "Anything goes, but all points lead back to classical music. The whole point of getting together was… to expand the way classical music is perceived…to defy convention in every aspect of our performances and recordings."
For its Fortas concert, the quintet brings a program that features Imani flutist Valerie Coleman's gypsy-inspired Tzigane; Hindemith's exhilarating Kleine Kammermusik; Czech composer Pavel Haas's Wind Quintet from 1929; Jakob Kowalewski's airy, ambient arrangement of Debussy's Bruyères; excerpts from Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring, an Imani recording of which was an iTunes Best of 2013 selection; and an arrangement of traditional Klezmer dances by Gene Kavadlo.
