Mason Bates's KC Jukebox Mashups Special Concerts

This D.C.-based duo is joined by a roster of talented musicians to performs some of its own bossa nova-inspired works plus new orchestral arrangements from today's leading young composers. Two DJs open each performance, followed by Composer-in-Residence Mason Bates kicking off the evening with an instrumental/electronica work.

Internationally renowned and locally adored, this D.C.-based duo's innovative integration of world music with electronica has pushed boundaries and influenced composers for the past two decades. For this extraordinary concert, Thievery Corporation (Rob Garza and Eric Hilton) is joined by a roster of talented musicians to perform works from their diverse catalogue, including music highlighting their bossa nova influences, as well as brand-new orchestral arrangements commissioned from some of today's leading young classical composers: Timo Andres, Teddy Abrams, Olga Bell, Chris Cerrone, and Anna Clyne. Kennedy Center Composer-in-Residence Mason Bates contributes a new piece as well, and also kick off the evening by joining his fellow musicians onstage for his acclaimed instrumental/electronica work The Rise of Exotic Computing.

DJ Justin Reed (Mercury Soul, Freakeasy/ illmesaures Chicago) and DJ Striz (Freakeasy/ illmeasures Chicago) will open each performance.
