KC Jazz Club: Lakecia Benjamin and Soulsquad

Friday, October 21, 2016

Though her own music is immersed in the vintage sounds of James Brown, Maceo Parker, Sly and the Family Stone, and the Meters as well as classic jazz, charismatic and dynamic tenor saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin's soaring, dance floor-friendly grooves take the classic vibe to a whole new level.

About

Charismatic and dynamic tenor saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin makes her Kennedy Center debut as a leader with her band. A familiar face to Center audiences--she was recently center stage at the NEA Jazz Masters Tribute Concert last May in the Concert Hall, playing and dancing with NEA Jazz Master Jimmy Heath--she got her start playing in the bands with Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys, The Roots, and Macy Gray. Though her own music is immersed in the vintage sounds of James Brown, Maceo Parker, Sly and the Family Stone, and the Meters as well as classic jazz, Benjamin's soaring, dance floor-friendly grooves take the classic vibe to a whole new level. She was a crowd-pleaser at the 2016 NEA Jazz Masters Tribute Concert.

Lakecia Benjamin will sign CDs after the performances on October 21. The signing will occur in States Gallery outside of the KC Jazz Club.
