Composer and conductor Maria Schneider is recognized for successfully blurring the lines between genres. She has an impressive list of commissioners, stretching from Jazz at Lincoln Center to The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, to a Grammy-winning collaboration with the late David Bowie. Schneider is among a small few artists to have received Grammy Awards in multiple genres, including both in the jazz and classical music categories. In 1994, she founded the 17-member Maria Schneider Orchestra, which features some of the finest jazz musicians today. She recently won Downbeat's 81st Annual Readers Poll Award for best Album of the Year for The Thompson Fields.
