Through his contemporary electronic group, the E-Collective, and its latest recording, Breathless (Blue Note), trumpeter Terence Blanchard comments on social justice in contemporary America. The CD title acknowledges the Eric Garner "I Can't Breathe" quote, which has become a rallying cry to protestors worldwide; following Garner's death in 2014--the result of a chokehold by an NYPD police officer--the incident sparked an international movement against police brutality. Blanchard continues to evolve as a bandleader, constantly shifting his ensembles, of which this is his latest. Read about a recent performance of Breathless in The New York Times
