The Kennedy Center's beloved Chamber Ensemble-in-Residence has been the reigning exemplar for the piano trio for more than 40 years and has played in every Terrace Theater season since its opening in 1979. We hope you will join us in welcoming "the greatest piano trio on the face of the Earth" (The Washington Post) back into their revitalized home as Joseph Kalichstein, Jaime Laredo, and Sharon Robinson dazzle audiences once again with a stunning program of Beethoven's most famous and beloved trios.
Notes from Joseph "Yossi" Kalichstein, Artistic Director of Fortas
The choice of these three Beethoven trios has a special meaning: we were to perform the entire cycle of Beethoven trios in three back-to-back concerts on September 10th, 11th, and 12th, 2001. Needless to say, on the 11th, the Terrace, along with our souls, went dark. The next day we felt compelled to bring some music back into the world, and the scheduled performance took place, culminating with the "Archduke" trio. The major work that was going to be performed on 9/11 was another one of Beethoven's great trios, "Ghost," and we played it in its entirety as an encore on the 12th. It is fitting and meaningful that we feature these two trios together again in this program.
