The Calidore String Quartet recently made international headlines as the grand prize winner of 2016's inaugural M-Prize International Chamber Music Competition, the largest prize for chamber music in the world. Heralded as "the epitome of confidence and finesse" (Gramophone Magazine) and "a miracle of unified thought" (La Presse, Montreal), this American Quartet brings one of the most exciting programs from its repertoire, "Hungarian Spirit," which showcases the influence and contribution of Hungarian music and artists on the string quartet canon.
Notes from Joseph "Yossi" Kalichstein, Artistic Director of Fortas
One of the joys of presenting is to identify and invite incredibly gifted new talents. It is a wonderful feeling to say to an established and admired artist, "I knew you when." We and many others think that the Calidore String Quartet belongs on this stage, and we are thrilled to be able to share this exciting emerging group with you. The Quartet will perform a program that highlights the great tradition of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, from Vienna's Haydn and Brahms to Budapest's Kurtág--Bartók's natural heir and one of the past century's brightest luminaries.
