Five-time Grammy(r)-winning soprano Dawn Upshaw is joined by the "consummate skill and quirky charm" (The New York Times) of So Percussion, today's leading percussion ensemble. This contemporary pairing brings an exciting freshness to our season with an evening that includes a brand new work by Pulitzer Prize–winning composer Caroline Shaw, created specifically for Upshaw and So Percussion through the commissioning consortium Music Accord. The Kennedy Center is a proud member of this innovative organization that connects composers and artists with the goal of creating new work.
Notes from Joseph "Yossi" Kalichstein, Artistic Director of Fortas
Iconic American composer George Crumb loves incorporating American folk tunes into his work and creating a rich tapestry of music around them. His ode to returning Civil War soldiers, Winds of Destiny, is a moving, rich tribute that is not easily forgotten. You will experience this work performed by the equally iconic Dawn Upshaw, together with one of America's best percussion quartets, the So. They also bring a newly commissioned work by Caroline Shaw, who is on the verge of becoming a household name, and deservedly so!
