In 1959, pianist Abdullah Ibrahim and trumpeter Hugh Masekela formed and recorded the Jazz Epistles, becoming South Africa’s earliest influential jazz band despite an apartheid government that pushed them into exile. Now Ibrahim, who Nelson Mandela once described as “South Africa’s Mozart,” and his ensemble Ekaya, unite with Masekela for a rare, historic evening to play their music that pioneered South African jazz. A co-production with Washington Performing Arts.
