Sunday, March 11, 2018 7:30 PM

DIRECT CURRENT Mason Bates's KC Jukebox

This journey in ambience, rhythm, and texture explores music by composers from California's past and present, using Bedouin-inspired tenting and pillows to transform our Atrium into an immersive and inviting environment. Standing room only.

Run Time

Approx. 1 hour

A journey in ambience, rhythm, and texture, California Mystics—a new edition of Mason Bates’s immersive KC Jukebox series—explores the trajectory of visionary California composers from Lou Harrison and Steve Reich to the present day. A DJ spins the decks both before and after this concert in our Atrium space, where Bedouin-inspired tenting and pillows will make for an invitingly bohemian environment.

(Please note: California Mystics is standing room only.)

The program includes Bates’s Mass Transmission, which looks to early radio broadcasts to comment on today’s interconnected communication, and concludes with So Percussion’s East Coast premiere of Nathaniel Stookey’s Junkestra, "a concise, rhythm-heavy work of considerable emotional scope" (Philadelphia Inquirer), played on instruments created for the occasion from locally sourced garbage.

So Percussion, Washington Choral Arts, Nathaniel Stookey, Michael Hey (organ), Aaron Goldman (flute)

Lou Harrison: Excerpts from Flute Concerto (D.C. premiere)
Steve Reich: First movement of Drumming
Mason Bates: Mass Transmission (D.C. premiere)
Lou Harrison: "Kyrie" from Mass to Saint Anthony
Nathaniel Stookey: Junkestra (East Coast premiere)

This event is part of the Kennedy Center's annual new celebration DIRECT CURRENT--an immersive showcase for cutting-edge contemporary arts and culture with a focus on interdisciplinary creations.

Performance Timing: Approximately 1 hour, with no intermission.
