The poignant prowess of our beloved Trio-in-Residence has been a foundation of Fortas Chamber Music since the series’ inaugural season in 1979. After more than four decades of global success, it is no surprise that the group has been hailed by the Washington Post as “the greatest piano trio on the face of the Earth” (The Washington Post). The unwavering connection between Joseph Kalichstein, Jaime Laredo, and Sharon Robinson—and the subsequent artistry that comes from their collaborative partnership—continues to inspire audiences everywhere.

A Note from Joseph "Yossi" Kalichstein, Artistic Director of Fortas
Remember the scene in Amadeus when Mozart changes a mediocre Salieri idea into an inspired one brimming with life? Well, some geniuses can perform that surgery on their own creations. Mendelssohn, after receiving a tepid response from colleagues for his first Piano Trio, changed it into the version you’ll hear on this program. The result? In Schumann’s words, “the most perfect trio.” It’s a privilege for us to come back to this work to rediscover its wonders.
