DAVID LANG: Gravity
FRANZ SCHUBERT: Grand Duo in C major for Piano Four Hands
LANG: After Gravity
JOHANNES BRAHMS: Sonata in F minor for Two Pianos

With their shared history as former students of Emanuel Ax, pianists Shai Wosner and Orion Weiss unite for an exhilarating evening including works for four hands—a rare treat for Fortas concertgoers. Their delicately curated recital pairs selections from Schubert and Brahms with two works from contemporary composer David Lang that enrich subtle nuances in the classical compositions. Wosner’s “exceptional artistry” (BBC Music Magazine) and Weiss’s “clean technique” (The Washington Post) combine to create a mélange of piano mastery.

A Note from Joseph "Yossi" Kalichstein, Artistic Director of Fortas

We featured David Lang’s music on the Fortas season a few years ago. So I’m grateful to these two wonderful pianists—whom I’ve also watched bloom over the years—for bringing Lang’s music back into the spotlight. In addition, they’re performing one of Schubert’s monumental four-hand masterpieces and a third version of Brahms’s famous Piano Quintet; the first version of which, a two- cello Quintet, was destroyed by the over-critical composer himself.
