Fortas Chamber Music Concerts

As former BBC New Generation Artists, the Escher String Quartet has established itself as a creative force in the UK and beyond. The group’s strength as expressive and nuanced performers is clear as they play with a “penetrating intelligence and curiosity” (The New York Times).

WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART: Quartet in F major
ERICH WOLFGANG KORNGOLD: Quartet No. 3 in D major
ANTONÍN DVORÁK: Quartet in F major, “American”

As former BBC New Generation Artists and one of the few chamber ensembles to receive the Avery Fisher Career Grant, the Escher String Quartet has established itself as a creative force in the UK and beyond. The group’s strength as expressive and nuanced performers is clear as they play with a “penetrating intelligence and curiosity” (The New York Times). And with a resounding endorsement from the legendary Emerson Quartet, their stardom continues to impress.

A Note from Joseph "Yossi" Kalichstein, Artistic Director of Fortas

Mozart, whose final quartet is featured in this program, was a legendary wunderkind, but he is not alone! At the age of 11, Korngold composed a full-length opera. Born in what is today the Czech Republic, he came to America to eventually become one of the most important composers in the history of Hollywood. A true gem outside of his film music output, Korngold’s D major Quartet is touchingly “Mahler-esque” yet highly original. I’m so grateful to the Eschers for affording us a rare opportunity to hear this creation!
