About

Pianist, composer, and newly signed Blue Note musician James Francies is no stranger to the Kennedy Center stage. Last season, he dazzled audiences with his genius on the ivories in José James’s Lean on Me and the 2018 NEA Jazz Masters Tribute Concert. Now, the spotlight belongs to him as he performs selections from Flight, Vol. 1, his debut Blue Note recording.

Before collaborating with artists like Lauryn Hill, Pat Metheny, and The Roots, Francies attended Houston's High School for the Performing and Visual Arts—Jason Moran’s famed alma mater. Moran recalls the young pianist playing on a level beyond “where we were when we were his age,” and that Francies’s almost daily creative experiences with music legends give him “an entirely different playing field to be starting from.”
