Schubert - Winterreise
It's hard to imagine a more rewarding way to spend a November evening; Schubert's ultimate song cycle, with it's rich, dark tones of melancholy, performed by "one of the leading exponents of the art song" (The Washington Post). Swedish baritone Hskan Hagegsrd leapt to fame as the engaging Papageno in Ingmar Bergman's 1974 film version of the Mozart's The Magic Flute, and has continued to charm opera, and recital audiences for two decades. His voice spans a "sturdy Wotanlike grandeur in its lower range and a sweetly tenorlike sheen at its top...[a] sound at once heroic and intimate" (The Washington Post). His partner this evening, the excellent pianist Warren Jones, has won high praise from critics as well; together, they engage "in tender, turbulent, lofty and lively conversations that lift the listener to another realm" (Cleveland Plain Dealer).
Part of the Kennedy Center's Millennium Celebration of the Legacy and Promise of the Performing Arts.
