For one performance, jazz great Wayne Shorter brings his own quartet and vocalist Esperanza Spalding to the NSO Pops. A highlight of the program will be the NSO co-commissioned Gaia, which Jazz Times called a "masterful" work.

"A true musical giant" (Los Angeles Times), multiple Grammy-winning saxophonist, composer, and NEA Jazz Master Wayne Shorter celebrates turning 80 with guest conductor Vince Mendoza, the NSO Pops, Shorter's own quartet--featuring pianist Danilo Perez, bassist John Patitucci, and drummer Brian Blade--plus Grammy-winning vocalist Esperanza Spalding, one of the jazz world's hottest new stars. Their inspiring program features the D.C. premiere of the NSO co-commissioned Gaia, "a masterful piece of work and one for the books--an orchestral jazz opus" (JazzTimes).

Performance Timing: Approximately 1 hour, 40 minutes, including one 15-minute intermission.
