Beyond the Score is "a runaway hit! Newbies and seasoned concertgoers can meet, learn, and be entertained."--Chicago Tribune

Ever wondered what inspired the creation of a great work of art?

Journey into the heart of the music with Beyond the Score. With live actors, visual illustrations, and musical examples, this multimedia experience reveals the illuminating stories found "inside" the score. After intermission, concertgoers return with newly discovered knowledge to hear a performance of the work played in its entirety.

In this fascinating multimedia concert, experience all the colors of Dvorák's "New World" Symphony.
In Dvorák's "New World" Symphony, one of the most popular orchestral works ever written, the idea of "echoes of nations" becomes very complex. For the composer and his fellow Czechs, the piece expresses longing for their homeland. For Americans, it's the first great symphony about America. And for African Americans and Native Americans, it resonates with themes embodying their songs and spirituals. Originally intended to be an opera inspired by Longfellow's epic poem "The Song of Hiawatha," Dvorák's Symphony No. 9 eventually wove together several cultures to produce a rainbow of music--a vision of many colors and identities.

Performance Timing:  Part One - 60 min.; Intermission - 15 min.; Part Two - 40 min.

Beyond the Score is produced by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra; Gerard McBurney, Creative Director; Martha Gilmer, Executive Producer.
