About

Ever wondered what inspired the creation of a great work of art?

Journey into the heart of the music with Beyond the Score. With live actors, visual illustrations, and musical examples, this multimedia experience reveals the illuminating stories found "inside" the score. After intermission, concertgoers return with newly discovered knowledge to hear a performance of the work played in its entirety.

Experience the primal power of Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring."

Stravinsky's score for the revolutionary ballet Le Sacre du printemps ("The Rite of Spring") sent ripples throughout the fabric of 20th-century art and culture. Smashing together Vaslav Nijinsky's ritualistic choreography with ancient folk music and pagan mythology yielded a groundbreaking collaboration the likes of which audiences had never seen.

At its Paris premiere in 1913, Stravinsky's brave new work swept its audience into a frenzy. Patrons were appalled by its rhythmic and harmonic harshness, savage movement, and frightful portrayal of human sacrifice, and a veritable riot ensued in the concert hall. Yet Stravinsky had tenderly developed his vision from archaic folklore and traditions of Russia and Lithuania--many sacred--with the aid of artist Nicholas Roerich. The seminal work that critics perceived as brutish had grown from a reverent celebration of nature, and Le Sacre du printemps soon rose to notoriety as a musical milestone.

Performance Timing: Part One - 60 min.; Intermission - 15 min.; Part Two - 35 min.
