About

The multifaceted guitarist from The National, contributing composer for the soundtrack to The Revenant, and all-around borderless artist joins the National Symphony Orchestra for a night of his celebrated original compositions.

Conducted by Jacomo Bairos, the program--which showcases Dessner's world-renowned artistic depth--includes the East Coast premiere of Quilting as well as Dessner's acclaimed St. Carolyn by the Sea for orchestra and two electric guitars, performed by the composer himself alongside guest guitarist Gyan Riley. The evening also features his work for string orchestra, Lachrimae; the U.S. premiere of his piano quartet, El Chan; and the U.S. orchestral premiere of a work Dessner contributed to The Revenant, "Imagining Buffalo."

Arrive early for a pre-show indie pop set by Flock of Dimes--the experimental solo project of Jenn Wasner from Baltimore's Wye Oak duo--starting at 8:15 p.m. on the Millennium Stage. For more pre-show music, check out unique animations created by artist Matthew Ritchie for the Kronos Quartet's recordings of Dessner's "Aheym" and "Iron City Tenebre"--at 8 p.m. and 8:45 p.m., respectively--in the Grand Foyer. After the show, stick around for a post-concert party that welcomes Scott Devendorf of The National as the evening's DJ. Expect to hear a mix of kraut, psych, and new wave rhythms when he takes over the turntables at the Kennedy Center after the concert.
