Displaying a rare and delicate mixture of hip composition, harmony, and improvisation, fusion-influenced Snarky Puppy makes its Kennedy Center debut with the NSO Pops, Jules Buckley conducting, its 2015 Grammy-winning Best Contemporary Instrumental Album Sylva.
Displaying a rare and delicate mixture of hip composition, harmony, and improvisation, fusion-influenced Snarky Puppy makes exploratory jazz, rock, and funk. Snarky Puppy features a wide-ranging group of nearly 40 musicians known affectionately as "The Fam," centered around bassist, composer, bandleader, and Alexandria, VA native Michael League.
Snarky Puppy, making its North American orchestral debut with the NSO Pops, invites you to its exciting live U.S. premiere of the group's 2015 concept album Sylva, which won a 2015 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album. This funky, Impressionist collaboration first recorded with Metropole Orkestis is dedicated to the mysteries of the forest--taking you from the tree-covered slopes of the Sintra mountains in Portugal and giant tall trees of North Carolina to the somber woods of Virginia and teeming swamps of Louisiana.
Says League, "Throughout the whole process [of writing it], my governing concept was to try to capture the many sides and personalities of the only place where I feel truly connected to the earth as a human being. A place that is at once innocent, frightening, awe-inspiring, impenetrable, fragile, stoic, telling, a shelter, a labyrinth, a temple, a tomb, a sanctuary, a parliament, a prison. The forest. I wanted it to be a suite, a single piece of music connected by a thread."
Following Sylva, Snarky Puppy and the NSO Pops will also perform "Thing of Gold," "Shofukan," and "Lingus."
Performance Timing: Approximately 80 minutes, with no intermission.
