Jacomo Bairos, conductor

Jazz and R&B singer, songwriter, and Grammy Award® winner Gregory Porter makes music that is at once timeless yet utterly of its time. Known for his deep baritone voice paired with provocative and political lyrics, he has “a gift for earthy refinement and soaring uplift” (The New York Times). Porter joins the NSO Pops with conductor Jacomo Bairos for an evening in support of his album Nat King Cole & Me, showcasing his thrilling presence and resonant vocals that won him a 2017 Grammy Award® for Best Jazz Vocal Album. Part of Renée Fleming VOICES.

Co-presented by Renée Fleming VOICES, NSO Pops, and Kennedy Center Jazz.

Performance Timing: Approximately 2 hours, including one 15-minute intermission.

Renée says, "When Don Was of Capitol Records first mentioned Gregory Porter to me, I immediately found Be Good on the Internet and became, well, obsessed! I was so taken with his melding of R&B and jazz vocals with his completely modern songwriting sensibility, I became a fan. His work takes a refreshingly honest look at the sometimes small moments that truly make up our lives. He has taken Europe by storm, and I'm glad he has found the time to visit us and participate in VOICES. I hope he will return again and again."

NOTE: Gregory Porter will sign CDs and other materials following both performances, in the Grand Foyer outside of the Concert Hall.
