Thursday concludes with Philip Glass’s soaring Itaipú, while Saturday concludes with the world premiere of Lera Auerbach’s ARCTICA.

The NSO performs a program of music inspired by the natural world; each evening ends with a different composer’s work for chorus and orchestra reflecting on humans’ environmental impact. Thursday concludes with living legend and Kennedy Center Honoree Philip Glass’s soaring symphonic portrait Itaipú, a response to the hydroelectric dam constructed between Brazil and Paraguay along the Parana River. Saturday concludes with the world premiere of Lera Auerbach’s ARCTICA, a major NSO/NNational Geographic Society co-commission featuring the acclaimed composer at the piano, as part of the Kennedy Center’s DIRECT CURRENT celebration. Teddy Abrams conducts both concerts in his NSO debut.

Beginning at 6:30 p.m. before the Sat., Mar. 30 performance
The Kennedy Center presents a free pre-performance panel about conservation, exploration, and resilience prior to the world premiere of Lera Auerbach's ARCTICA. Panel participants will include Auerbach, the Russian American poet, composer, and artist; her collaborator Dr. Enric Sala, a marine ecologist, global conservationist, and Explorer-in-Residence at the National Geographic Society; Ole Jørgen Hammeken, an explorer, actor, author, and educator from Nuuk, Greenland; and Thomas Friedman, the internationally renowned, best-selling author, reporter, and columnist (and winner of three Pulitzer Prizes) will moderate.

This event is part of The Human Journey,collaboration between the Kennedy Center, National Geographic Society, and the National Gallery of Art. The Human Journey invites audiences to investigate the powerful experiences of migration, exploration, identity, and resilience through the lenses of the performing arts, science, and visual art.
