What was Beethoven thinking when he wrote the four most recognizable notes in the history of music? The iconic opening motif of Beethoven’s Fifth has astounded audiences since its 1808 premiere, and the work has continued to be one of the most influential pieces of Western music in the world—so much so that the Allied Forces in World War II used the motif as code for victory, the four-note rhythm representing ‘V’ in Morse code. Gianandrea Noseda will bring fresh perspective to this revolutionary masterpiece with all of its original urgency and triumph intact in a program that includes Schoenberg’s Chamber Symphony No. 2 and Brahms’s Variations on a Theme of Joseph Haydn.
