About

Washington National Opera opens its season with its first-ever production of Umberto Giordano's verismo masterpiece of the French Revolution. Visionary Polish director Mariusz Trelinski, remembered in Washington for his extraordinary 2001 Madama Butterfly, is joined by conductors Plácido Domingo and Eugene Kohn for a stunningly vivid portrait of revolutionary France and its doomed lovers. Renowned Italian tenors Salvatore Licitra and Carlo Ventre share the role of the idealistic young poet Chénier, and the luminous Italian soprano Paoletta Marrocu is Chénier's aristocratic lover Maddalena, with acclaimed Mexican baritone Jorge Lagunes as the vindictive Carlo Gérard.

Performed in Italian with English Surtitles®
