About

Washington National Opera proudly opens its Spring 2005 season with Tchaikovsky's The Maid of Orleans, based on Schiller's drama, that tells the story of the vision-filled peasant girl who leads France to victory, finds love in the arms of an enemy, and dies at the stake accused of witchcraft. Acclaimed soprano Mirella Freni introduces America to her celebrated portrayal of Joan of Arc, and baritone Sergei Leiferkus returns as the Burgundian knight Lionel, who captures Joan's heart. In his sixth and most ambitious opera, Tchaikovsky created a magnificent European-style grand opera of pageantry and passion, with a lyric score of melodic richness and beauty.

Performed in Russian with English supertitles.
NOTE: Supertitles not visible from Rear Orchestra.
