With the company premiere of Jenufa, WNO presents the work that launched Janácek's operatic career. Laced with folk traditions, the work follows the tradition of operatic realism and the trends of social realism in 19th-century Czech literature. The unsentimental and realistic portrait of ordinary people is a grim story of infanticide and redemption, yet the strength of the human spirit and the power of forgiveness triumph in the end. Patricia Racette makes her company debut as Jenufa, a role she has performed worldwide. Judith Christin, who debuted with WNO in 1978's The Seagull and most recently appeared in Ruddigore (1988) returns as Grandmother Buryjovka, alongside Catherine Malfitano (Madama Butterfly) as the Kostelnicka. Conducted by renowned Czech conductor Jirí Belohlávek and directed by David Alden, Jenufa's incomparable international cast also includes Kim Begley, Raymond Very, and Charles Robert Austin in their company debuts, as well as Jeffrey Wells (Das Rheingold, Susannah) and Janice Meyerson, in a co-production with Houston Grand Opera and English National Opera.
Performed in Czech with English supertitles.
