The Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition is hailed as the most prestigious jazz competition in the world, launching the careers of some of today's jazz sensations including Joshua Redman, Jane Monheit, Marcus Roberts, Roberta Gambarini, Tierney Sutton, Joey DeFrancesco, Chris Potter, Gretchen Parlato, Ambrose Akinmusire, Ben Williams, and many others. This year's Competition will feature the drums and will be judged by an illustrious panel including Carl Allen, Brian Blade, Terri Lyne Carrington, Peter Erskine, Roy Haynes, and Ben Riley.
As part of the year's Competition, TMIJ will present an All-Star Gala Concert honoring Madeleine Albright for her longtime support of jazz and the Institute, featuring performances by legendary jazz masters and internationally renowned artists. The evening's co-hosts will include Herbie Hancock and Thelonious Monk, Jr. George Duke will serve as the evening's musical director. All proceeds from the Gala Concert will support the Institute's public school jazz education programs in Washington, D.C. and across the country.
