The spotlight was on Kiss Me, Kate when it opened to rave reviews in November of 1999 and received a steady stream of awards including five Tony Awards and four Outer Critics Circle Awards. The producers, Roger Berlind and Roger Horchow, are pleased to announce that Rex Smith and Rachel York will star as the feisty and funny couple, Fred Graham and Lili Vanessi in the First National Tour of Kiss Me, Kate. Rex Smith and Rachel York were most recently seen performing together in The Scarlet Pimpernel on Broadway. Kiss Me, Kate will open in New Haven, CT this June and will visit many major cities including Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, Dallas, Chicago and San Francisco.
Kiss Me, Kate is one of Broadway's most beloved musicals, with music and lyrics by Cole Porter and book by Sam and Bella Spewack. This comedy knock-out features a classic score with some of Cole Porter's biggest hits: "Another Op'nin', Another Show", "Too Darn Hot", "Wunderbar" and "Brush Up Your Shakespeare." Set backstage during an out-of-town tryout for a musical based on Shakespeare's "Taming of the Shrew", egotistical actor-producer Fred Graham (Smith) and his ex-wife, Lili Vanessi (York) bicker and romance their way through this timeless story. And just like Shakespeare's Petruchio and Kate- whom they play on stage in the play-within-a-play-it's a fight to the finish in a classic battle of the sexes!
The 1999 revival of Kiss Me, Kate was the first Broadway revival of the show since its debut on Broadway on December 30, 1948 at the new Century Theatre. It ran for 1,077 performances and starred Alfred Drake, Patricia Morrison, Lisa Kirk and Harold Lang. Kiss Me, Kate was the first Broadway musical to ever win a Tony Award.
Kiss Me, Kate is directed by Michael Blakemore, choreographed by Kathleen Marshall, with musical direction by Paul Gemingnani, sets by Robin Wagner, costumes by Martin Pakledinaz, lighting by Peter Kaczorowski and sound design by Tony Meola.
