NOTE: FOR MATURE AUDIENCES ONLY. PLAY CONTAINS SEX AND VIOLENCE.
Frank Wedekind's epic play about an irresistible woman was written in 1894, but never performed in its entirety. Lulu -- or Eva, Ellie, or Mignon as she is known to the various men (and women) who fall under her spell -- seems at first a soulless siren, who cruelly uses her power over those who madly, helplessly love her. That her beauty is cursed, and her power short-lived might make this a standard Victorian cautionary tale, were it not for the otherworldly quality of Wedekind's bitterly comic cynicism and the illuminating production from Britain's acclaimed Almeida Theatre.
Critics hail the Almeida, whose "stylish taste" "sets standards higher than those of [Britain's] larger national companies" (Alastair Macaulay, The Financial Times).
