The ancient meets the avant-garde with the Kennedy Center debut of the 70-member Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, one of the world's leading symphonic ensembles of traditional Chinese instruments.  In the Concert Hall, the orchestra contrasts Tan Dun's Fire Ritual--a work that employs spatial distribution of instrumentalists in the hall--with Zhao Jiping's Silk Road Fantasia Suite, a concerto scored for a wind soloist playing multiple instruments. The program also includes Peng Xiuwen's Fantasia on Terra Cotta Warriors, a grand soundscape that evokes 2,000-year-old battles, and Grand Victory, an arrangement of folk wind and percussion music from Shanxi Province.
