Doudou, Artistic Director
A multi-disciplinary performance troupe focusing on ethnic dance drama, Shanghai Song and Dance Ensemble draws from various genres to re-invent Chinese dance and speak to audiences in a new language. Dubbed "the Baryshnikov of China," Artistic Director Doudou Huang's combination of dance and kung fu was featured in the closing ceremony for the 2004 Athens Olympics.
At the Kennedy Center, the company performs some of its signature works. Symbols of China is a suite of dances highlighting elements of Chinese history and culture, from terra cotta warriors and martial arts to Peking opera. Six Dance Imageries of Zhou Dynasty is a new work featuring Chinese modern dance drawn from traditional martial arts. Choreographed to an original score by Tan Dun that's inspired by the sounds of the ancient Hubei imperial chime bells. the work highlights the quality of the bronze used to make the bells, their special timbre, the ancient calligraphy that adorns them, and the six bronze statues associated with them. The program also features a selection of ethnic folk dances.
