About

A style of spoken drama based on laughter and comedy, kyogen is often compared to commedia dell'arte. With more than 70 years in the art form, Artistic Director Mansaku Nomura has been designated a Living National Treasure of Japan. His company is known for captivating interpretations of comic classics and distinguished performances by the Nomura family. Joining him for the festival is his son, Mansai Nomura, the artistic director of Tokyo's Setagaya Public Theatre and a celebrated kyogen, film, and television actor.

Feb. 11: Traditional Kyogen Works
Boshibari ("Tied to a Stick"), Kawakami ("Headwater"), and Kusabira ("Mushrooms").

Feb. 13 & 14: The Kyogen of Errors
Mansai Nomura's interpretation of Shakespeare's classic tale is "wonderfully lighthearted and even silly, mocking everything from its own traditions to chorus lines to the plot" ( San Francisco Chronicle).
